Shanghai gets closer to the sky
In the recent construction of the foundation for China’s to-be tallest building, the Shanghai Tower, BASF’s innovative admixture technologies help to set a global concrete placement record: 61,000m3 of concrete were placed in a continuous process of 60 hours duration. The BASF admixtures supported a consistently high concrete quality.

6 meters in depth and 121 meters in diameter, the foundation slab of the Shanghai Tower covers the same area as approximately 1.6 standard football fields. BASF's concrete admixture Rheoplus
® 323, powered by sureTEC and SDC technologies, was selected to ensure that concrete construction quality was maintained during the single, uninterrupted pour, while still meeting the tight time schedule.
Super Retention Technology (sureTEC) allows producers to maintain control over concrete workability between the batching plant and the placement site for two hours or more. Due to the fact, that 450 ready mix trucks supplied concrete for the foundation slab from six different batching plants, maintaining outstanding concrete workability was extremely important.
Smart Dynamic Concrete (SDC) is a new generation of highly flowable concrete designed for faster placement porcess and higher concrete durability. SDC is made possible by the use of Rhematrix
®, an advanced viscosity modifying admixture.
When completed in 2014, the Shanghai Tower will dominate the sky at 632 meters with 127 stories.
