Nordöy road tunnel, Faroe Islands
Watertight subsea tunnel construction
The Nordöy road tunnel connecting the islands Eysturöy and Bordöy runs 150 meters below sea-level. The Masterseal® 345 membrane in combination with traditional polyethylene foam sheets ensures a secure waterproofing of the tunnel.

Cost-efficient and fire-proof
Usage of Masterseal 345 has many advantages. Only a small, three-men work team is required; quick application by spraying also saves time. This is made possible by the computer-controlled Meyco Logica Potenza spraying machine. It applies the membrane evenly, quickly, and efficiently to the first concrete layer of the tunnel wall’s sandwich construction. One goal for the tunnel operators was to use non-flammable materials whenever possible. The Masterseal 345 waterproofing membrane – unlike traditional polyethylene foam sheets – is non-flammable and thus provides perfect fire protection. It was possible to use Masterseal for more than 50 percent of the tunnel’s entire surface; traditional polyethylene mats were also used, especially for particularly wet areas.
Securing the tunnel walls
BASF’s service package also included solutions for securing the tunnel walls: the Rheobuild® 2000Pf dispersing agent for injection cements, the Rheocem® 650 injection cement, and the Meyco SA 162 and Glenium® SKY concrete admixtures.
