Marmaray Tunnel, Istanbul, Turkey
Customized admixtures for a tunnel between two continents
In the future, the Marmaray Tunnel in Istanbul is to connect Atatürk Airport on the European side of the city with the industrial city of Gebze in Asia. Of the tunnel’s entire length of 13.6 kilometers, 1.4 kilometers will run beneath the Bosporus. It’s deepest section will be located 56 meters below sea level – never before have concrete tubes been placed in such depths. The material requirements for this seminal project are challenging: frost-resistant, earthquake-proof concrete with no fissuring and a durability of at least 100 years.
