Tiling on the cruise ship “Celebrity Solstice“
Cruise tourism is flourishing worldwide. Attracting millions of travelers each year, cruising has become an increasingly important niche market in the tourism industry. Mega-liners such as the “Celebrity Solstice”, which has been in service since November 2008, offer their passengers sheer luxury. Tiles have an important share in creating this luxurious environment on the cruise ship built by the Meyer Werft in Papenburg.

Resilient floorings that withstand all weather conditions are indispensible on deck of a cruise ship. BASF’s affiliate PCI has developed tiling solutions tailored to the specialized needs of the shipbuilding industry, which go by the name of PCI Ocean. The “Celebrity Solstice” is an outstanding reference object providing several examples for the application of different PCI products and product systems.
For ceramic coverings on the upper deck PCI Ocean Flex PUR was used. The tile adhesive meets all the requirements of the cruise ship’s exterior, which is exposed to constantly changing weather conditions and sea water. Being waterproof and highly flexible, it is ideally suited for such vibrating, moisture-sensitive substrates as decks of ships. In addition, PCI Ocean Flex PUR is in accordance with the internationally valid Marine Equipment Directive (MED) for ship equipment.
PCI Carralight was chosen for all interior natural stone tiling. This adhesive from the PCI Carra product line, which is adapted to the properties and needs of natural stones, is designed to minimize tensions in the compound. PCI Nanolight – a multi-use adhesive for ceramic tiles – was used to make the classy interior of the “Celebrity Solstice” perfect. Throughout the shipbuilding process, PCI’s technical advisers helped in words and deeds drawing on many years of experience when it comes to tiling.
